A Prosthodontist is a dentist that specializes in dental implants, cosmetics, and complex reconstructive dentistry.   They are experts at using artificial materials (ceramics, metals, plastics, implants, etc.) to repair or replace teeth and facial structures.   To become a Prosthodontist, a dentist must complete an additional 3 years of full-time formal training after dental school in an accredited hospital- or university-based prosthodontics program.   Prosthodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA), and less than 2% of all dentists are Prosthodontists.

Why Might You Want to See a Prosthodontist?

Most dental problems can be treated by your general dentist; however, certain situations may require specific expertise to ensure a beautiful and lasting result, or to resolve a particularly challenging problem.  In these cases, your dentist may refer you to a prosthodontist.  You may also contact a prosthodontist directly if you have questions or concerns about your dental health.

A few common reasons to see are prosthodontist are:

  • You are seeking a second opinion about a dental problem
  • You are interested in dental implants
  • You want to improve the look of your smile
  • You have multiple missing or damaged teeth
  • You are unhappy with your dentures or removable partial dentures
  • You are in need of complex dental reconstruction due to a traumatic injury, a congenital (birth) anomaly, or oral cancer

Although prosthodontists usually treat patients with the most complex dental issues, patients with routine dental needs can also benefit from seeing a prosthodontist.  From a simple filling or cleaning, to the most extensive reconstruction, each situation is addressed with the same care and attention to detail.
